We’re proud to announce that fumopay, in partnership with Big Issue, has been shortlisted for the Open Banking Expo Awards 2025 in the category Open Banking for Good.
The Awards celebrate the innovators shaping the future of open banking and open finance, and this recognition highlights the positive impact of our work to support Big Issue vendors.
Tackling financial and digital exclusion
As cash use continues to decline, many Big Issue vendors risk losing income from customers who no longer carry cash. Together with Big Issue, we designed a simple and affordable solution that enables vendors to accept instant digital payments, without the need for WiFi or charging card readers.
Customers simply scan a QR code on the vendor’s lanyard and pay directly from their bank account, with funds landing instantly. Vendors benefit from lower costs, easier onboarding and immediate access to earnings – giving them confidence and security when selling magazines.
Real-world inclusion
This initiative is more than just a payment solution. For many vendors – who are among the UK’s most marginalised workers – it’s a way to remain connected to society, build financial confidence and take part fully in the digital economy.
It’s a powerful example of how open banking can deliver real-world inclusion, removing barriers while also introducing open banking payments to the wider public in a simple, trusted and meaningful way.
Kevin Ludford, Founder of fumopay, said:“We are honoured to be recognised as finalists at the Open Banking Expo Awards. This nomination is a testament to the power of collaboration and the real-world impact open banking can deliver. Our partnership with Big Issue has shown that by removing cost and complexity, we can give vendors a simple and trusted way to accept payments, build confidence and remain connected in a cashless world. Most importantly, it’s about creating financial and digital inclusion for people who need it most.”
Thank you
A huge thank you to our partners at Big Issue, for your help and support in making this possible.
We’re excited to be recognised alongside so many inspiring organisations and look forward to the Awards ceremony later this year.
